Experienced Ingrown Toenail Treatment
Assessment, conservative care and nail surgery options based on the cause, duration and severity of the condition.
Ingrown toenails are one of the most common foot health issues we see at DanEverson Podiatry. Primarily affecting the big toes, an ingrown toenail occurs whenthe side of the nail pierces into the skin. This often results in pain, inflammationand, in many cases, infection.
Quite often, ingrown toenails are caused by improper nail care, such as trimming nails too short or rounding the edges, or by wearing shoes that are too tight and place excessive pressure on the toes. More systemic issues such as obesity, poor posture and genetic predisposition may also contribute. Certain health conditions, including diabetes and conditions that affect circulation, can also increase the risk of developing ingrown toenails.

Ingrown Toenail FAQs
An ingrown toenail is when the side of the nail pierces into the skin. It most commonly affects the big toe and can cause pain, inflammation and sometimes infection.
Common causes include trimming nails too short, rounding the edges, wearing tight shoes, injuries and certain medical conditions. Obesity, poor posture and genetic predisposition may also contribute.
After the nail is cleared, it is important to keep the toe clean. This may involve daily salt water soaks and applying antiseptic ointment such as Betadine with a light dressing until it resolves.
The procedure involves permanently removing the side of the problematic nail.
If infection does not clear after the nail is cleared, antibiotics may be required from your general practitioner.
A noticeable lump on the side of the big toe near the nail is a common sign. The area may look red, swollen or tender, and in some cases there may be pus or drainage if infection has developed.
Yes. If treated early, ingrown toenails can often be managed conservatively by removing the edge of nail that has penetrated the skin and providing advice on nail care and prevention.
For recurring or chronic ingrown toenails, where the causes cannot be avoided, surgery may be recommended.
